西太志：Taishi Nishi

「遠くで降る雨：Rain Falling in the Distance」

西太志は、1983年大阪生まれ。2006年大阪芸術大学卒業から数年を経たのち、2015年京都市立芸術大学大学院絵画専攻を修了しています。

私どもが西太志の作品に注目したのは、彼の作品の中に紡がれる少年の物語、そこに映画などの一場面を切り取ったかのような動的な瞬間という感覚を強く認識できたからです。その事に加え2017年の京都市立芸術大学ギャラリー@KCUAのグループ展において、西はゴヤの黒い絵画に注目し、大作により物語を組み立てようとしました。少年の内面を表現した大作10点によるその展示は、西にとりその後の作品の変換点ともなったような気がします。大きな特徴は、キャラクター達が生まれ、彼らが物語の主役となっていった事でしょう。コミカルでどこか寂しげな、西が言うところの「怪物」達は、善悪併せ持つわんぱくで可愛い存在のようです。そのことは今回の個展、「遠くで降る雨」でも引き続き展開されてゆくようです。新作「なんて柔らかな抱擁」では、マスクを付けた少年がヘビと共に草むらに寝そべっています。少年は目を閉じ考え事でもしているのでしょうか。その顔を覗き込んでいるヘビ。ご存じのように蛇は古今東西様々な隠喩・象徴として用いられてきました。この「なんて柔らかな抱擁」もまた、その様な意味を表している事でしょう。それが何なのか、西の絵画の意味する事に想いを巡らす事ができます。漫画やアニメで育った世代の西ならではの図像から、彼が今という時代に何を感じ、見据え、表現するのかご期待いただければと思っています。そしてそこにはスペインの画家ゴヤのような、リアリストの一面も含まれているに違いありません。遠くで降る雨の、気配や匂いは間も無くやってきます。その雨音が奏でる様に、西もまた新たな物語を描いてくるのでしょう。よろしくお願い致します。

Taishi Nishi was born in Osaka, Japan in 1983 and completed his graduate studies in painting at Kyoto City University of Arts in 2015, a few years after graduating from Osaka University of Arts in 2006.

We were attracted to Nishi's work because we strongly recognized the story of a boy in his work, and the sense of dynamic moments that seem to be clipped from a scene in a movie or other media. In addition to this, in the 2017 Kyoto City University of Arts Gallery @ KCUA group exhibition, Nishi focused on Goya's black paintings and attempted to construct a narrative through large works. The exhibition of 10 large works expressing the inner life of a young boy seemed to be a turning point for Nishi in his later works. One of the most significant changes in Nishi's work was the creation of anime-like characters, who became the main characters of the story. Comical and somewhat lonely, these “monsters,” as Nishi calls them, seem to be cute and naughty, good and evil at the same time. This seems to continue in his solo exhibition, “Rain Falling in the Distance”. In the new work “What a Soft Embrace,” a boy wearing a mask lies in the grass with a snake. Is the boy closing his eyes and thinking? The snake peering into his face. As you know, snakes have been used as a metaphor and symbol in various ways in all ages and cultures. This “What a Soft Embrace” must also represent such a meaning. We can ponder what it is and what his paintings mean. We hope that you will look forward to seeing what he will feel, see, and express in the current era through the unique iconography of Nishi, a generation raised on manga and anime. His works must also contain an aspect of realism, like that of the Spanish painter Goya. The sign and smell of rain falling in the distance will soon arrive.
